Die hochbedeutende Kollektion des Diplomaten und Antiquars Philipp von Stosch (1691–1757) war 1724 von Bernard Picart (1673-1733) und erneut 1760 von Winckelmann publiziert worden. Winckelmanns Auftraggeber war Heinrich Wilhelm Muzel-Stosch, der Neffe und Erbe des Sammlers, für den auch das Winckelmann-Porträt von der Hand Marons bestimmt war. Die Katalogisierung der Sammlung war für Winckelmann mit ersten intensiven Studien originalen antiker Kunstwerke verbunden. Die Arbeit eröffnete ihm entscheidende Einblicke in die Unterscheidung der Nationalstile der Ägypter, Etrusker, Griechen und Römer sowie auch der entsprechenden Stilentwicklung.
